Note Material: Post-It note with lines, yellow

List Items: carrots, face wash, shampoo, milk, cascade

Discarded Condition: folded, slightly wrinkled

Comments: I particularly enjoy when people make lists of items, and then throw in a brand name of a product.  Surely, this person could have just said “dishwasher detergent” instead of “Cascade”.

Note Material: “Apple”-shaped paper from pad

List Items: N.Y Eve [heading?], 1. Target - Curling Iron, 2. Movie/Shrimp 3. Dinner, [at top right of heading, smaller printing] Tide PM

Discarded Condition: Flat, slightly wrinkled

Comments: Ahh…and apple paper pad.  Maybe this is a teacher?  A well-organized teacher, getting ready for New Year’s Eve. Go to Target to get a curling iron.  Then get or go to a movie…which may involve shrimp…?  Then dinner…but didn’t she just get some shrimp?  And what is “Tide PM”?  Is that for washing only at night?

Okay, now I’m ready…

I don’t make lists.  I just think to myself “I’m smart, I’ll just remember the things I have to do/buy.”  Unfortunately, I underestimate my forgetfulness.  For me?  It’s no big deal.  For others, lists are a way of life.  Some people just need that sense of order and control; they can see their tasks, check them off, and feel like they accomplished something.

In this digital age of smart phones, text messaging, and mobile internet, I’m fascinated by the number of people who write lists on paper.  As I wander stores aimlessly looking around, trying to remember what I was supposed to buy, I always seem to come across people’s discarded lists, usually crumpled into a ball and thrown on a shelf or in a cart.

Over the years, I’ve been collecting them.  Why?  Because these lists are strange, and fun, and sometimes disturbing.  Or maybe I’m just weird.  Who knows?

The Discarded List is my collection of, well, discarded lists that I’ve found and scanned.  And none of these lists are “fake”.  They are just lists I’ve found…you know, because I don’t make lists.  I just find them, and scan them. :)

If you have any discarded lists you would like to share, please feel free to email scans (.jpg format preferred) to thediscardedlist at gmail dot com.
